Celebrate nature and be kind to the Earth has been my business ethos since the beginning of Boop. It’s this ethos that inspired me to start creating Terrariums, a solution to the question what can I do to reduce the amount of waste in landfills?
Upcycling – I only use upcycled, recycled and repurposed glassware and frames to create my Terrariums and Moss Frames making each one bespoke and keeping my job interesting!
Soil – For my specially formulated substrate mix I only use Peat Free soil. Peat forms in boggy, peatland biomes from plant materials that don’t fully decay in the acidic and anaerobic conditions. Extracting peat causes bogs to dry out impacting the fauna and flora in the area as well as increasing the risk of wildfires. Peat also stores a vast amount of carbon, twice as much as the worlds forests. Harvesting peat causes the stored carbon to be released back into the climate and means less carbon can be absorbed in the future.
Paper Clay – Paper clay is a great sustainable alternative to polymer and traditional clay. It is made from recycled paper, which is a much more environmentally friendly material than the chemicals and plastics used in polymer clay. Paper clay is also lighter and requires less energy to fire than traditional clay resulting in a smaller carbon footprint. Plus, paper clay can be air-dried, eliminating the need for kilns altogether.
Suppliers – Whenever possible I use UK based suppliers for the materials and tools I use to keep the carbon footprint of my products and business as minimal as possible. I never use Amazon to purchase any materials or tools.
Product Life – All of my products are crafted to last as long as possible. I use stabilised Moss for my Moss & Flower frames so they don’t require any water or maintenance to remain fresh. I only work with dried flowers, most of which I dry myself, so they can be enjoyed decades longer than short lived fresh flowers.
